Cambridge Primary

Why Study Cambridge Primary Mathematics?

Maths helps us to think analytically and have better reasoning abilities. Our primary mathematics curriculum encourages lifelong enthusiasm for analytical and rational thinking.

What will students learn?

Learners develop a holistic understanding of the subject, focussing on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships. They will become mathematically competent and fluent in computation, which they can apply to everyday situations.

‘Thinking and working mathematically’, a unique feature of our curriculum, encourages learners to talk with others, challenge ideas and to provide evidence that validates conjectures and solutions. When learners are thinking and working mathematically, they actively seek to make sense of ideas and build connections between different facts, procedures and concepts. This supports higher order thinking that helps them to view the world in a mathematical way. (Cambridge Assessment International Education, n.d.)

How is the programme taught?

We have divided this subject into three main areas called ‘strands’, which run through every primary mathematics stage. Learners will develop skills in:

  • Numbers
  • Geometry and Measure
  • Statistics and Probability

The strands work together to help students recognise connections of mathematical concepts as they engage in creative mathematical thinking to generate and improve numerical fluency.

Why Study Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics?

Maths helps us to think analytically and have better reasoning abilities. Our lower secondary mathematics curriculum encourages life-long enthusiasm for analytical and rational thinking.

What will students learn?

Learners develop a holistic understanding of the subject, focussing on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships. They will become mathematically competent and fluent in computation, which they can apply to everyday situations.

Key topics covered in the course

  • Numbers
  • Geometry and Measure
  • Statistics and Probability

Prior requirements and hours of study

We recommend that students who are beginning this course should have previously completed a Cambridge Primary course in Mathematics.

It requires 4 – 5 hours per week of study time for your child to complete Year 7, 8 or 9.

LOWER SECONDARY MATHEMATICS

Cambridge Upper Secondary

Why Study Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics?

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics encourages the development of mathematical knowledge as a key life skill, and as a strong basis for more advanced study. You will build your confidence by developing competence and fluency with mathematical concepts, methods and skills, as well as a feel for numbers, patterns and relationships. You will also gain an understanding of how to communicate and reason using mathematical concepts. (Cambridge Assessment International Education, n.d.)

Key concepts covered in the course

  • Algebra and graphs
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Vectors and transformations
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Prior requirements and hours of study

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics requires about 130 hours of study. The number of hours needed may vary depending on your previous experience of the subject.
We recommend that students who are beginning this course should have previously completed a Mathematics curriculum such as the Cambridge Lower Secondary programme or equivalent national educational framework.

IGCSE MATHEMATICS

Examinations

Students studying Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics take two papers in a single examination series.

Paper 1 Duration Weighting
Short-answer questions 1 hour 30 minutes 35%
Paper 2 Duration Weighting
Structured questions 2 hours 30 minutes 65%

Examination Entry

All students who complete the appropriate courses at Cambridge Online Academy are eligible to sit exams like the International GCSEs or A/AS Levels through Cambridge International. But while students can do all of their learning online at home, we cannot administer exams online. To sit exams, students must travel in person to one of 10,000 Cambridge International Exam Centres located in 160 countries around the globe.

But we’re here to help. We’ll provide you with all the necessary exam codes you need to present to the exam centre, and any other pertinent information you need to know to get your child signed up correctly.

Also, as part of the initial information, we provide during the pre-enrolment process, you’ll receive contact information for all the Cambridge International Exam Centres in your area. Once you’ve ensured that the exam centre of your choice offers the specific exam level your child needs, the exam centre will arrange accommodations for your child and give you detailed information on obtaining the results.

Why Study Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics?

Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics develops a set of transferable skills. These include the skill of working with mathematical information, as well as the ability to think logically and independently, consider accuracy, model situations mathematically, analyse results and reflect on findings.

You can apply these skills across a wide range of subjects and these skills equip you well for progression to higher education or directly into employment. (Cambridge Assessment International Education, n.d.)

Key concepts covered in the course

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Mechanics
  • Probability & Statistics

Prior requirements and hours of study

Cambridge International AS Level Mathematics requires about 180 hours of study, and Cambridge International A Level Mathematics requires about 360 hours of study.

These figures are for guidance only. The number of hours needed may vary depending on your previous experience of the subject.

We recommend that students who are beginning this course should have previously completed a Cambridge International GCSE course in Mathematics. Grade B/6 or above in Mathematics at IGCSE (or equivalent) is required before starting Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics. It is also necessary that all A-Level students have IGCSE English Language, or the equivalent, at Grade C/4 or above.

AS & A LEVEL MATHEMATICS
